WhatsApp prides itself on maintaining its users’ privacy. They have data security measures in place that prevent anyone but you and the person you’re messaging from reading your messages. Even WhatsApp can’t see what you’re sending. This is standard for all messaging.

WhatsApp also has different privacy settings that you can select or opt out of, depending on your needs. This helps you control who can see your profile information. Note that the default setting is “everyone,” which means anyone in the world can see your information. We strongly suggest setting it to “My Contacts” if you’re using the app for personal use. We also suggest you turn off your “live location,” which tells people where you are.

If you have a problem with a user, you can block them from contacting you. This means they won’t be able to send you or receive your messages. To block a person:

  • Select Block from the main menu, then Add New.
  • Enter the contact name in the search bar.
  • When you find the person you want to block, select the Block button at the bottom of your screen to confirm.

You can also report offensive or illegal content (like scammers). Simply scroll to the bottom of the app and click “report contact” or “report group.” WhatsApp has the power to ban people from the app altogether if they break the rules.

Finally, because of the popularity and encrypted messaging features of WhatsApp, you may come across scams. If you get a message from someone you don’t know, be alert.

  • Never click on a link, share personal information, or forward these messages.
  • Never pay someone to use WhatsApp. WhatsApp will always be a free service.
  • Report these messages to WhatsApp.
